Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Revelation 4:11, a verse which begs our participation in the worship of the great and mighty and glorious King.
Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created.
These are the words of praise that come from the four mysterious winged creatures, each uniquely reflecting something of God’s nature, and hearkening back to words of prophesy earlier in the Scriptures. As they surround the throne of God, these are declarations that they never cease to repeat, words that over and over induce prostrated worship of the 24 crowned elders also positioned around the throne. We should with great joy and adoration and trembling tread lightly here, for such an utterance brings us to the foundation and root from which all things flow and to the One to whom belongs everything that has ever been. The first words alone remind the reader what life is meant to be all about: Worthy are You. No matter what life circumstances we are dealing with, regardless of how confusing things might be, irrespective of our feelings at any given moment, God is worthy of exaltation; He is Lord and God to whom belong all glory, honor and power. This is a difficult thing to voice in many moments on any given day. I have been spared so many griefs thus far in life, but even in the middle of the night last night as my baby daughter was refusing to sleep, voicing her discomfort for unknown reasons, I did not think God worthy of praise…and that was a small trial. When we are confronted at this point, we realize our great unworthiness of anything good. But the only reason that such a though would depress us is because we are not properly observing the great worth and worthiness of God. It is a vicious cycle as we remain in the flesh this side of heaven.
The reason for Almighty God’s worthiness here is that He is Creator of everything. We might regularly acknowledge such as true but rarely think on the implications of it. All owe Him everything but no one and nothing could ever pay Him back. But repayment is not what He is after. His mode of creation is also something to take note of. Things came to be by His will; He spoke and things were. The question might enter our minds as we think upon such realities, “What then am I to do?” Those nearest to Him in heaven are our examples. He longs that we would know the kind of fulfillment that those around the throne enjoy, fulfillment that they have because they are fully focused upon Him. Our response is to consider His worth and then worship, ascribing to Him glory and honor and power. We do this with our words, our minds, and our bodies. Jesus proclaimed the greatest commandment to be one of love for the Lord, love that engages every part of us.
Have you been taken up completely in worship lately? Reading Revelation 4 is a great place to start. Consider the ceaseless declaration of sinless worshipers around the throne and join in their song.

The imagery that this scripture brings to my mind always causes me to weep. I cannot wait for the day when all our worship is perfect, holy and displays how worthy our Lord is.
I think that is very much the right response! When I think on such \”heavenly words\” I'm taken back to a time in TN when some friends and I spent the night up on a mountain–it was cold and the stars were brilliant; as I was lying on my back facing them, some of those phrases were running through my mind in such a way that it really stuck with me.
