Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Revelation 19:17-18 wherein we discover an announcement that will one day shake every soul to its core.
Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.”
Some of the movies that I tend to enjoy the most are ones where good and evil are well portrayed. When I say well portrayed, I mean that there is some standard by which the portrayal adheres, painting what is truly good as good and what is truly evil as evil. This is why I like films like “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and found ones like “I am Legend” or “Constantine” interesting (even if to a lesser degree). I’m certainly not saying that everything in these films is perfectly reflective of how God defines what is good and evil or even giving them all a recommendation, but I just point out that they resonate with something inside me that I believe falls in accord with truth.
But no images stir my heart more than the kind that is found in Revelation 19. The picture of the glorious and terrifying Jesus atop a white horse, eyes ablaze and leading a mighty cavalry has already been presented. And now one of His messengers has an announcement to make before the holy army about to engage in the final battle on the earth that will provide a bloody feast for the birds of the air. The time for evangelizing and long-suffering grace has passed and the moment has come to reveal to every living thing the reality that it had either accepted as true or rebelled against in days previous. From the high and mighty to the low and feeble, each and every enemy will receive what has been coming to him for the rejection of the lordship of the King. This makes me wonder some things.
Will there be those among the party of the enemy who had at one time voiced agreement with Christ who will be struck with utter horror as the hooves are heard in the distance and the light appears on the horizon? Will he tremble at the realization that he decided to build his life upon his own ideas, reinforcing them with nothing more than his continual godless drivel and the assertions of the supposed great intellectuals? And then, will the frustration felt throughout life by his neighbor and friend now riding on the side of the eternal King, though he throughout life loved him and spoke the truth kindly to him, swell to a righteous fury as he advances with his fellow redeemed warriors, hungry for the slaughter guaranteed by the Master? I hope and believe so, but that moment is not now.
I wonder…if you have considered recently which side of the battle field you are camped on and what it means for you to be there. For myself and my brothers and sisters in the Lord, I wonder if we are lovingly, patiently laboring for the souls that will meet the mighty Rider one day, seeking to know Him more at each and every turn that we might reflect Him more accurately to all. Let us press on with uncompromising confidence and a patient endurance which our Lord is Himself at this time keeping.
