Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Psalm 103:11-12 wherein we discover God’s boundless love and forgiveness toward those who fear Him.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
We have a children’s book at home that tells the story of a daddy rabbit and a baby rabbit who are trying to outdo one another in declaring how much each one loves the other. Night time comes with the sky full of stars and the sleepy little one tells his dad that he loves him all the way up to the moon and immediately falls asleep. The dad then quietly responds, “I love you all the way up to the moon…and back.”
We’re asked here to consider God’s love and forgiveness. Consider His love which is unhindered and without distraction toward His children. The heavens, from a human standpoint at least, are boundless. We can look farther and farther into them with special instruments and might tell the ones we adore that our love for them reaches to the farthest stars. But God looks upon the whole of His vast creation and pinpointing each one that fears Him, He gives him/her a love so extensive and comprehensive that we should be left terribly humbled and eternally grateful. This love is of the kind that never wavers. He never has to relearn to love us after we have been unfaithful, and when our eyes are off of Him, He never removes His affection from us. Indeed, when we were not even looking, He sent His Son to die so that we could know His love and return it. Although it might be difficult to understand at first, the ones that enjoy the fullness of this love are those that fear God. But realistic thinking solves the tension felt: Seeing God as Almighty God, who is boundless in all His attributes, reminds us of who we are and puts us in a place of trembling before Him. God says it’s good to live in reality and His love is most purely and accurately known when we do so.
And then also in like measure and wonder is His forgiveness. The east will ever depart from the west and the same with the reverse with neither ever coming to its full distance from the other! These extremes that ever run from one another in opposite directions are like our sins vanishing from us at God’s command. Once forgiven, they cannot be reapplied to condemn us; His love sees to it. He cannot condemn His risen Son and so He will not do so to all who are found in Him.
Do you know the love and forgiveness of God through the living Christ? There is nothing more massive and secure that could ever be applied to you. For all who enjoy God’s blessing in this way, let us continue to revere Him as Lord and cherish our relationship with Him that extends far beyond a trip to the moon…and back.
