Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Proverbs 30:5-6 wherein we are reminded of the truth and completeness of God’s Word and the benefits to all who will accept this.
Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.
Have you ever been misrepresented? People often worry about this when information gets into the hands of certain media persons, but it also happens regularly in common conversation. You may have had a story to tell or beliefs to communicate and somewhere along the way, whether purposefully or unwittingly, someone changed the account in their retelling of it. Take something then that has shown itself to be of far more importance and impact than anything you or I might communicate, consider altering it, and you’ve created a bigger problem than a “creative” tabloid reporter ever will.
The testimony of God Himself and the experience of man throughout the centuries is that every word of God proves true. We can misunderstand Him and must sometimes wait for certain things to be revealed, but He has given the instruction, leaving us as the ones called to adhere to it in submission to Him. When we do such, we are told and will find that He is our shield. This doesn’t mean that hardship won’t come our way, but that we are secured to Him, that our souls will never be snared and pulled away from Him, and that nothing can ultimately destroy us. Now the warning that is given to those who would add to His Word at first might sound minor. Who hasn’t been rebuked at some point and/or called a liar? But what does it mean if that’s what God says about someone? It means that He’s counting our sins against us instead of acting as a shield for us. In other words, continuing in such will mean sitting under His eventual condemnation.
These verses have great implications for those who teach and preach the Word of God. Such people must continually remind themselves that God isn’t looking for any help in revealing “new and true” things. The job, rather, of such a one is to help others understand what God has already said, to act as His mouthpiece. But as much as it is true that some people are called to declare God’s Word in more organized or formal settings with many regular listeners, everyone who knows Jesus is to speak of Him according to the truth revealed about Him. Take great comfort in the fact that the Word of God is sufficient and complete, and make it your aim to know it, that you might know and make Him known in ever increasing measure. This is day one of that journey with all of life to follow.
