Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Hebrews 10:28-29 through which we learn to think seriously about where we are truly at with our Maker.
Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?
If you have at some point in your life acknowledged Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord, can you be certain that you will be saved in the end? This is an important question everyone needs to ask. It is easy to get a bit turned around in reading the book of Hebrews if you come to it with a hammered down position on the nature of the security of your salvation without standing under this Word with humility and a readiness to be instructed.
The author first gives a little historical review, reminding his readers of how the Hebrew community functioned under the law of Moses. If someone decided they weren’t interested in obeying God, it only took a couple people to point him out and he was done for. Pretty harsh, but that was a long time ago, right? True, and many things have changed since then. But post Jesus, should all the church folk just make sure they sing “Amazing Grace” now and then and thank God that they’re eternally secure? Maybe, but not necessarily. If we look at these verses, we find something interesting about those who find themselves contemporaries of the new covenant. For some, worse punishment than what people experienced in Moses’ day should be expected, even if it’s a bit more delayed. Who is going to get this more extreme punishment? It is in store for the one who has spurned the Son of God…profaned the [sanctifying] blood of the covenant…and has outraged the Spirit of grace. The thing that should be a bit frightening about these words is that they seem to be meant not for those “out there” but for those who may take part in the morning worship service and might call themselves Christians. They are the ones who, according to verse 26, go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth. Those amusing themselves in this way God does not find amusing. Those who talk of loving God’s grace through Jesus while with their lives shake their fists at the same Master should be greatly afraid. Things would have been rough right away for them in Moses’ day; in our day, things will end up immensely worse for them beginning at an undisclosed moment in time. What happened on the cross of Christ was no small thing, and treating it as if it was will not be forgotten.
The answer to the initial question should therefore be carefully answered. The doctrinal answer is yes, there is security forever for all who are in Christ. The Bible is clear on this. The practical answer faces another question or two: Are you this day a servant of Christ, having humbled yourself and turned from your sin? Do you comfort yourself with a statement you made at some point in history or with the work of the Jesus you currently live for and love? If the latter is true, you can have confident hope in salvation through the One who never fails though you will many times. Be sure of where you are at with Him today.
