Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Hebrews 10:19-22 wherein we are moved to worship and thanksgiving at the realization of the mighty work of our great Priest.
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
I have this quirky thing about me. I get very uneasy if I feel like I’m in a place that I don’t really belong. I would never dream of (but perhaps have a nightmare about) blending into a party that I wasn’t invited to or entering a foreign room in such a way that would disrupt what was going on there. The reasons for this are probably two-fold. First, I tend to believe that others have a thought-out reason for doing what they do, inviting who they invite, etc, so who am I to disrupt those plans as if I have a better idea? Second, I likely tend to think that people actually take more note of me than they do. Both of these are out of balance and the second one warrants an “ouch!” and “get over yourself” response. But even though I’m hopefully improving in these areas, I still find great relief in knowing that I can have confidence through Jesus to stand pure before my Father. I can be near Him and with trembling joy say, “I belong.” This is good news for quirky me and can be the same for normal you.
It is this reality of our great priest, Jesus, dieing to open the way for us to God’s holy presence that is stated as our reason for drawing near. What isn’t emphasized here is a great responsibility to do everything perfectly or be super Christians because what is being communicated is the amazing transformation that has happened to us. It certainly follows that our desire would be to walk in the newness of life that we have experienced, and such is emphasized elsewhere, but in the present context we should be overcome with thankfulness, moved to praise, and taken up in worship.
Notice also the focus on sincerity that the author highlights. Let us draw near with a true heart… There is no hiding before the Father and there are no half-way Christians with smiles on the outside and tarnished hearts within. Conscience and body have been purified so that sins committed, though evil and displeasing to the Lord, don’t stick or change our position before Him if we have been made new. This is why we can have confidence or full assurance of faith–not because of our success but because of our Savior’s victories. He always succeeds in the unconditional actions He takes, salvation being one of those actions.
Do you know Him, and if you do, is your heart filled with thanksgiving today? Praise the One who can say to each of His beloved children, “You belong.”
