Genesis 26:4-7–Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation

Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Genesis 26:4-7 wherein we see the good and the bad of the legacy that Abraham left for his son Isaac.

I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”

So Isaac settled in Gerar.  When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,” because she was attractive in appearance.

I wonder sometimes what kind of a legacy I’m leaving.  I think of this particularly in the realm of my family, considering the fact that my children are observing all that I do, forming in their own minds ideas of right and wrong, fact and fiction, wisdom and foolishness.  It’s a weighty thing to set my mind upon.  Every time I lack patience, say something sarcastic, or even show that I’m not bothered by something offensive to the Lord is burned into their little minds.  But on the same token, every time I exhibit the fruit of the Spirit, showing love, patience, faith, etc., they are also left with an impression.

Well, Isaac grew up watching his father as well and knew of the good and the bad, while always admiring Abraham and wanting to be like him.  And we have every reason to believe that Abraham was a good dad overall.  It’s actually in large part because Abraham was a righteous man of faith that God looked favorably upon Isaac, carrying on His promise to make a great nation through him.  We see that reason being given here: “because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge…I’m going to carry on that blessing now by way of you and your children.”  This would have given Isaac much encouragement to keep in place the same great faith in the Lord that he observed in his father.

But it seems that such was not the only legacy that Abraham left.  If we remember back to his life, we are reminded of two separate occasions where he and Sarah played the, “We’re just brother and sister” card because Sarah was apparently so beautiful that it was feared men would literally kill to have her.  But now that Isaac also has a very lovely wife in Rebekah, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps of utilizing a little trickery, a bit of dishonesty, to try and keep himself safe.  I suppose we could say that this is a lesson about getting oneself a homely wife (Isn’t there a song about that?), but sense I’ve already failed miserably in that department, apparently having missed that lesson altogether and accomplished the drastic opposite, it’s perhaps better to simply focus on the fact that we pass much along to those that follow us.

What we do is important, both in public and in secret, each of which often becomes known by others that we would never anticipate finding out about our actions.  Let us dedicate every moment unto our God, believing that Jesus is both the Savior of our souls and the Lord over our every motion.  Submit to Him fully today and give others a picture of a life of faithfulness to emulate tomorrow.
