Genesis 21:1-4–Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation

Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Genesis 21:1-4 wherein we see God fulfilling His promises to Abraham and Sarah and their joyful obedience to Him.

The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.  And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him.  Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.  And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

There are those moments in life when all seems well in the world.  We experience relief, confidence, thankfulness, and hope for good days ahead.  Abraham and Sarah were likely experiencing a time like that.  They had listened to God’s voice, waited for Him to act, tried working their own plans of action, walked through family quarrels, and now experienced His wonderful grace through the birth of their promised son.

Notice how everything seemed to have fallen together in the ways that God had promised and commanded.  God said He would visit Sarah to make her a mother, and He did.  God gave Abraham a time for when this would happen, and He stayed on schedule.  The instruction on a specific name to be given to this son was heeded.  And the covenant of circumcision that Abraham received was implemented with baby Isaac.  In other words, everyone was doing what they promised and according to the directions given.  That makes for a good day.  There is so much pleasure that comes through walking with faith and patience before the Lord, living according to His direction and listening to His voice as He speaks into our lives through various means.  Now, reading on through this chapter, we still see some of the consequences of bad choices made and the normal struggles that we encounter with others simply because life is full of bumps in the road, poor communication, and any number of other hardships delivered by this fallen world.  But for Abraham and Sarah, it was time to look past those things and celebrate a birthday.  Within Christian circles, we do the same thing today.  No family is perfect, but when a baby is born, especially when a couple has waited so long for one to be given, we praise God and rejoice over His generosity, praying blessing over the new little one, and forgetting for a bit the challenges of the day.

Are you waiting on the Lord for Him to bring to pass promises He has given in His Word and perhaps confirmed in some special way to your spirit?  Are you tempted some days to give up on patience and take matters into your own hand?  In looking at the present account, be encouraged that God has a plan.  Ultimately, we’re all waiting for the return of Jesus when He will take His church home and establish His heavenly kingdom on earth.  He has said that it would happen, and He calls for our faithful obedience until then.  Take Him at His word and fully entrust yourself to Him today.
