Genesis 1:1-2–Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation

Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Genesis 1:1-2 wherein we are given a picture of the eternality of God’s presence on His created world.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

In the darkest of times, God was there.  Think about this for a moment.  Before He had told the light to appear, before there was even solid ground to stand on, God was present and He was Creator.  You and I had no thoughts, no form, no existence.  This is humbling and perspective-building.  We can easily get consumed with our own little worlds, turning our minds over problems, hopes, and fears.  Oftentimes we feel alone in in these quiet considerations.  But as much as God was there in the beginning, so He is near today, having never withdrawn his presence from the earth.

Notably, God took interest in his creation of the formless world that He made.  Though it in a sense “spoke” of his glory, it was nothing in comparison to the simplest life-form and didn’t hold a candle to the complexities of man that He later made in His image.  How much more then does He look upon you and I with great devotion and an intense pleasure over what He has designed.  This caring attention is confirmed throughout the Scriptures both by way of statement and through various examples, many that we see through the ministry of Christ.

In light of these realities, some things become worthy of our meditation.  Concerning the universal feeling of that ebbing and flowing emotion of loneliness, we should be encouraged by God’s nearness.  As His Spirit hovered over the face of the dark, unfeeling, deep waters, so His Spirit hovers over ours.  It is our ignoring of Him that is the problem at hand when we deny Him.  For just as Jonah, even in his active fleeing from God could not escape either His presence or His effect on the seas that his ship sailed across, so we should keep ourselves aware that in our loneliness as we move or remain stationary, He is where we are.

Consider also the problem of sin.  Sins are often actions of the heart or hands that are performed with the assumption that we are unseen by any judge.  We have in those moments held, as it were, a cloud above us so as to insulate ourselves from God and any others who might hold us accountable.  But He, even if others don’t, sees and knows even the inclinations in our spirits during such rebellion.  The result then is a hardening of heart and automatic lessening of our acknowledgment of His presence.  In our sin, we both grieve our Creator and sicken our own souls.

Have you thought today on God, your eternal Maker and faithful Companion?  Have you taken time to think about His revealed presence through Jesus Christ?  Know He is near you this moment as present as He was in the very beginning, desiring intimate fellowship with you both now and forever.
