Daniel 10:12–Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation

Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Daniel 10:12, wherein we observe the consequences of the faithfulness of Daniel and are encouraged toward the same.

Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words.

Daniel is here observed in conversation with an angel, a messenger of the Lord, who has been sent to him for his encouragement.  His presence was at first enough to drain the prophet of all strength, but it was not because of harsh words given–it seems that his majesty induced such a response.  If there would have been a man that might have stood upright before such beings, it would have been one such as Daniel, one full of faith and discipline who continued in uprightness through much adversity and pain.  Much like Joseph, he was an exile who became a friend of kings and served in public office, blessing greatly the same people who kept him from his homeland.

Note here the consequence of Daniel’s quiet prayers over the years.  The angel informs him that he had not gone unnoticed.  Instead, though there were evil men who sought his life, using his piety as a means of putting him to shame, he continued in his daily pursuit of righteousness and uprightness before his Lord.  Just think of it!  All of those moments where he, much like us, probably felt as if his prayers rose no higher than the ceiling and his actions only made life more trying, where humility went unrewarded by men, God was hearing and watching and storing up encouragement for him.  For in response to Daniel’s prayers, we see that the message from the angel is “fear not” and “I have come because of your words.”

How much we can gain from the example of Daniel!  His great desire was to understand God’s will and plan, to wait in humility before the Lord.  But his method was one of life practice in the same in that he was uncompromising, unashamed, and willing to quietly stand against the opposition even when his life was in jeopardy.  How easy it would have been to grow slack in obedience and daily faithfulness in spiritual disciplines, even while still voicing a commitment to the Lord and His purposes.  But we, like Daniel, have been called to more than this.  There is much value in steadiness, much blessing in the continuation of holy pursuits.  Daily trust Him, daily seek Him, and daily serve Him.  And then “fear not,” knowing that nothing passes by the notice of the King.
