Welcome to Daily Scripture Readings and Meditations covering Proverbs 19:25. We learn here the importance of accepting reproof as people of understanding instead of running our mouths as scoffers.
Strike a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence;
reprove a man of understanding, and he will gain knowledge.
A scoffer thinks that he is strong, but he talks much bigger than he actually is. When one who has true strength comes along and smacks his foolish mouth to silence him, onlookers might learn something. The simple for instance, who are at the brink of going in a direction either good or bad, can learn about the importance of managing one’s tongue and so come to understand prudence. It is far more desirable to learn from another’s foolishness than to learn from your own.
Quite different than a scoffer is a man of understanding. Such a person still has room for improvement and so will at times display a lack of wisdom. But of all people to correct, these are the most rewarding, for they accept the word of reproof and come out better from it.
It is so easy to take offense when confronted instead of traveling the humble road to further knowledge. For myself, I always tend to think that I know more than I actually do and want to keep up that appearance. To some degree then, I must be honest in saying that I have more of a scoffer’s heart than one of understanding; there have been many times where my tongue is itching to break loose and blast another and so play the part of the scoffer.
Lord, give me a readiness to receive Your correction through the voice of others that I might know and understand Your ways more fully and speak only what is beneficial.
