Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation–Psalm 37:4

Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Psalm 37:4 where we learn to place our delights and desires in a place above their current state.

Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37 comes to the one who is fretting over what he sees in the world.  It seems that often the wicked prosper in what they do making them at times a tempting model to follow.  There are many instances in life where it is indeed true that the unrighteous seem to get the most attention, have the most wealth, and get their way in general.  But David, through the Spirit’s leading, challenges God’s people to wait on the Lord.  Patience will be needed to see that God, in the end, brings justice and carries the righteous to their blessed inheritance.

So then, instead of working one’s way to the temporal goal of his/her desires, a call to refocus is here put forward.  Cherish the Lord, delight in Him is the charge.  When this happens, we will find that instead of using the Lord to get what we want, the things that we want will actually change.  Our heart will begin to match His heart.  Instead of financial prosperity being our aim, we will seek true, everlasting fullness.  Instead of exalting ourselves above others (and even imagining ourselves wiser or bigger than God at our most foolish moments), we will long for His exaltation in this world.  After this transformation takes place in our hearts, there will be many times where we have longings that are good and godly but must wait to see fulfilled.  This is where the promise gives the believer courage and patience when desires are not immediately met.  What we can bank on is that God will either show us where we are off base in what we are wanting or will present it to us in His perfect timing.  This is where the rub comes.  If the fact that the Lord might change our desires (in His knowledge of what is best for us) frustrates us, than we are not delighting ourselves in Him.  And if we are unwilling to wait on Him for the good that He promises, then we do not trust Him.  But when, with great joy and satisfaction, we gaze in love upon the Lord, both our desires and their fulfillment will be to our ultimate liking.  Just as wonderful and nourishing meals cannot be found on a platter in the pantry whereas prepackaged, ready-to-swallow sweet snacks can, so it is with what is truly good and worth waiting for from the Lord verses the many fun but damaging temporal pleasures at our disposal.

Experience the change that God through Christ brings to one’s soul and trust Him to form and meet your desires.  Such is where fullness is found.  Believe that your desires can be of a more perfect nature than they are in their current state.  Trust that God can reveal more of His heart to you that this might happen.

  1. Excellent commentary on how it is that "God gives us the desires of our heart."

  2. Thanks Mom…it's one of those easy ones to take and just run with and end up with a wrong idea of a wonderful promise from the Lord.

  3. I absolutely love meditating! I never thought it could work before I gave it a shot… I wish everybody would give it a chance. In the beginning I just felt a bit more peaceful and was amazed that this peace stayed with me the whole time or at least a few days. Now I enjoy it every day!
