Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Proverbs 22:14 where we learn to cling to Jesus instead of the falling into the pit that the Lord gives the wicked over to.
The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit; he with whom the LORD is angry will fall into it.
Should we think ourselves safe? The way we answer that question must depend greatly on our relationship with the Lord. The temptation to push the line or even to jump into the pool of sin with the intention of jumping back out again faces us all at one point or another. But observe here the man who likely thought himself safe or at least able to control his future during a time of displeasing God. He is given over by a sovereign hand to one who will not spare him or help him as he falls headlong into darkness.
We do not know the exact point at which the Lord gives people over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity (Romans 1:24) which gives us great reason to cling to the Savior, not doubting His power to save, but realizing regularly the wicked tendencies of our flesh toward all forms of immorality and idolatry. Such sins look enticing and satisfying when we are wandering in the dark, wanting a bit of joy and fun, but they blind us the nearer we come and swallow us whole when we least expect it. There are hideous-looking fish in the deep sea who use lighted appendages as tackle and with great success. Such fish, should they rise nearer the surface, would exhibit only the dimmest of lights and be declared ugly and frightening by their prey who navigate by the light of the sun. The Lord is light and by Him we see what is truly good and daily enjoy His favor.
What then should be the nature of our outlook? We must guard against self-justification and soft views of the King. He did not die so that you and I could set our own standards and then hope that He agrees with us in the end. He died because there was a righteous standard we could not live up to, a righteous standard that we are still held to and will meet only if we find our identity in Him. If we find ourselves continually banking on His grace apart from humble repentance, we should fear that our next step might be into the deep pit, a pit that we might not even recognize as such until the King returns and covers it over for all eternity.
