Welcome to today’s Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Proverbs 21:21 where we find what it is best to pursue if want that which is truly good.
Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor.
My son and I enjoy a good game of hide and seek now and then. When I am crouched down or squeezed into a hiding spot, he comes after me calling out my name in hopes that I will give him a small, audible hint as to my location. And when he comes to the end of his search, low and behold, he finds…me–maybe not in the position he imagined I would be in, but it’s me nonetheless. This is nothing profound but we would consider it to be a good thing, even as simply evidenced by the smiles and laughter we share. And so it is with this proverb. We should not be surprised when we hear that the outcome of a search for righteousness and kindness is something that accords with what was sought! And so we would conclude that perhaps when we are met in life with everything unpleasant, it might very well be that we may have spent a good amount of time pursuing the same, often without even realizing it. For instance, we may spend our lives chasing after entertainment thinking that it will fulfill us, only to find that it brings ultimate disappointment, a dull mind, instability, and perhaps even poverty. In other words, we have unwittingly pursued emptiness and found it.
If we would then conclude that it is good to have life, righteousness, and honor as declared here, what then is the nature of the righteousness and kindness we are meant to pursue? There is nobody who fleshes this out for us better than Jesus. How did He approach this pursuit? Well, at one point in His ministry, the disciples were urging Him to enjoy some lunch at a time when He was focused in on something else. He told them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work” (John 4:34). He was honed in on helping a woman and her friends who had great misunderstandings about God, worship, and relationships. He treated them honorably and with tenderness which resulted in their belief in Him as the Savior! Jesus’ work of righteousness and kindness unto the Father, toward the people in His path, resulted in more of the same with those to whom He was speaking. It didn’t always happen that immediately or even at all for His immediate listeners, but life has come to the multitudes who have encountered Him since then. He shows us the way toward living within a Proverb like this one; He knew how to pursue a kind of greatness that resulted in immense blessedness. He offers us His way, not to mention Himself. Want life? Get Jesus.
