Welcome to Daily Scripture Reading and Meditation covering Proverbs 20:7 where we are called to integrity and see the benefit received by those who come after us.
The righteous who walks in his integrity—
blessed are his children after him!
What we do and how we live affects others in general. How much more then are children affected by the lifestyles of their parents! The wise father (or mother) lives a life of righteousness where integrity is of great importance. Children are observant often without great intention. Not knowing how to live, they feed on all that they see by way of complete necessity, almost through an instinct that God has put into them. And by all that they do not visualize, they are still affected, for the private decisions of their parents have great influence over the futures of their children. Specifically for a father who refuses to lead his family well, with love and provision, the children will not experience the blessing that they otherwise might have enjoyed.
When a father acts foolishly, making enemies of others without godly reason…when he acts like a boy, burying himself in hobbies…when he seeks his own glory instead of directing his family the the glory of God…when he sees his family as a nuisance instead of a blessing…when he seeks sexual fulfillment outside of his marriage bed…when he contemplates or pursues divorce because he can’t take the time to understand and care for his wife…he might as well be cursing his children. Look at the news of today; this holds true.
But for any of us as parents, and specifically for us as fathers, who at the very least have dipped our toes into the above follies, the blessing of our children can start/increase today; there is redemption. For as much as I get filled with fury and sadness when I hear of all the children (and wives) who suffer at the hands of idiots, my King reminds me that the answer is the gospel and that I only know something of the truth because He has revealed Himself to me…a fellow idiot every time I turn my eyes away from Him.
My friend, do you know that Jesus, the Son of God, is the starting place for any eternally good thing to happen in your life? Do you know that for your children to be truly blessed through your parenting, you must submit yourself to Him, accepting the forgiveness of sins and new life that He offers through His shed blood and resurrection? If you say that you know Him, do your children see Jesus in you that they might be drawn to Him and be eternally blessed? By God’s grace, the shift from curses to blessings can start with you; Jesus provides the way.
